On a Saturday morning in September, members of SEEED(Students Endeavoring for Enlightened Environmental Decisions) , the Morehouse College environmental organization under the leadership of Markese Bryant, Erik Howell and Antonio Lockett joined the Outdoor Activity Center to help with some of the outdoor maintenance. They removed invasive plants and mulched flower beds.At the end of the day there were 15 large trash bags full of invasive plants and 50 wheel barrows full of mulch that were laid down that day.
Derek Roqumore, alumnus of Morehouse College and one of the Directors at the Outdoor Activity Center, hopes to tighten a long standing relationship with the AUC schools through similar service projects.SEEED is interested in coming out monthly to do service work to help build and maintain sustainable biking and pedestrian tails.
WAWA (West Atlanta Watershed Alliance) and WAMBA (West Atlanta Mountain Biking Association), which are both housed at the OAC, are currently maintaining over 400 acres of green space and over 10 miles of natural service trail. The OAC has only one full time employee, so most of the work that gets done is through the help of volunteers. The OAC looks forward to building a team of committed regular volunteers to help run the center and support many of the programs and service projects that are hosted at the OAC.
