On August 20th WAWA board member Derek Roqumore presented the PARC ASAP agenda to NPU-S for endorsement at the Vickers Community Church of God in Cascade.  PARC (Parks Atlanta Rescue Coalition) is a coalition of community leaders, park advocates and environmental organizations, and their proposed ASAP (Act to Save Atlanta Parks) program consists of three steps:

(1) Allocate 1 mil of existing property tax for park maintenance by 2012, (2) Dedicate funding for new parks and park amenities by 2013, and finally (3) Build concrete steps to assure park safety.

NPU-S approved the motion to support  the PARC ASAP agenda, which proves to encourage more economic development, improve the safety of our communities, and support the health of our citizens.  Since 1993, the City of Atlanta has reduced the number of parks and recreation employees in half.  Among the 25 largest cities, none has a smaller percent of its land dedicated to parks.  Many Atlanta residents do not feel safe in many of the existing parks, because of public safety concerns and the location of much of city’s greenspace.  As PARC works to increase the amount of park space, they hope to improve public opinion around being active outdoors.
